  • 例子: 卓越於事業 Vs 照顧家庭成員;
  • 例子: 保持穩定工作 Vs 轉做不穩定但有意義的工作;

你內心懇切的禱告,祂從來沒有忘記;
你順服守候的心志,上主看見,旁人也看得出;

Remembering Benny (by Charles Lam, dated 4th January 2010)

I first met Benny in March 2003, in a talk he gave on life management skills organized by The Oaks. Since then, we had a few hundred hours of communications and working together, including numerous Canada-Hong Kong calls. I know that most people call him Uncle Benny or ‘Dou Suk’ , but he wanted me to call him ‘Benny’.
In this part of my life, he has played many roles and I have enjoyed every one of them.
Benny was my life coach in giving me guidance and correcting my mistakes. I became his disciple in forming a story-telling based REST (renewal, empowerment, support network, transformation) Group which is still running today. He was my mentor when I received his spiritual advice and encouragement to form my unique ministry; also my teacher when I took courses that he led at HKPES.
Benny was my colleague when we taught a ‘Learn to learn’ course together at Christian Times. We were learning partners when we explored and sometimes debated about management thoughts. I was also his business partner in the promotion of his book published in October 2006.
Whole-heartedly I have admired Benny’s passion and talents in writing his blog messages and mind-maps, practicing life long learning so wonderfully. He could scan worldwide changes quickly, and sensitively detect and absorb information most relevant to specific organizational and personal needs. Benny was therefore a genuine ‘action learner’ who could successfully link theory with practice.

I want success!! (by Dr P K Au) #

Frankly, at the bottom of our heart, no one likes failures; we all want success.
Thanks to the Internet, I have re-connected with more and more of my classmates from high school. I have found that quite a few of them are retired or close to retirement, spending lots of time traveling and enjoying life. Others are high flying politicians, university professors and businessmen. A couple of them are multi-multi-millionaires, and even rank among the top wealthiest people in Hong Kong. At times their successes leave a sour taste in my mouth.
As a Christian, a fundamental question I need to ask myself is: What does success mean in the Bible? Does this mean primarily prosperity in this life as claimed by the highly popular Prosperity Theology advocates such as Joel Osteen?
After much reflection upon the Bible and my own experiences, I would like to share with you my view of criteria of success based on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.
Blessed
The first criterion for success can be found in Matt 5:3-10, commonly known as the Beatitudes. Here Jesus describes the ideal qualities of His disciples – in other words, successful disciples – and promises blessings upon them. Some people may translate the word “blessed,” to mean “happy,” but true blessedness is so much more – it encompasses happiness, but it cannot simply be reduced to happiness.
I like what D.A. Carson says: “To be ‘blessed’ means, fundamentally, to be approved, to find approval…Since this is God’s universe there can be no higher ‘blessing’ than to be approved by GodIf God’s blessing means more to us than the approval of loved ones no matter how cherished, or of colleagues no matter how influential, then the beatitudes will speak to us very personally and deeply.”
Effectiveness
As depicted in Matt 5:13-16, success also means being effective as the salt of the earth and light of the world. That is, it means being a blessing to others.
As the salt of the earth, we have the effect of delaying moral and spiritual putrefaction of the society we live in. As the light of the world, we are to allow the light of Christ within us to shine out from us, so that people may see it.
(to be continued)
# In addition to his teaching and evangelistic ministries at church, Dr. P.K. Au has been a marketplace disciple at different workplaces over the past three decades . Currently he is Sessional Instructor at Ambrose Seminary and Volunteer Lecturer at Chrestos College. He is also "tent-making" in The Chinese Academy (Calgary) as Head of External Affairs & Organizational Effectiveness.

Why Plan if we have faith in God ?

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (Matt 6 : 26)
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own…” (Matt 6 : 34)
People use Bible verses like these to explain why planning is not necessary. They think that God will pave the way if we have faith in Him. Worrying and planning are not signs of faith.
But thinking further, if birds do not make an effort to find food, they will die. How do we know that they do not plan? For us humans, God has given us a brain to think, and store knowledge and experiences. These valuable life assets are gifts from God; we would waste them if we do not make good use of them.
Another gift from God is free will. He does not want us to be robots waiting for his signal before making every movement. We can and should plan and make decisions.
Therefore, keep on sleeping just because we have not heard God’s wake-up call could be an excuse! Nor should we keep on playing computer games believing that with faith we can pass an examination without making due preparation.
Unfortunately some people do not want to bear any responsibility; they throw it to God and say, “God will guide”. After drinking, some drive and say, “God will lead”. After mixing lust with love, two persons get married and say, “God will provide”. ….I believe however, it is unlikely that God will guide an irresponsible person to take responsibility, nor a lazy person to become a lazier one.

Does God find us faithful?

Lyrics of song 'Find us faithful' may give us some answers:

We're pilgrims on the journey
Of the narrow road
And those who've gone before us line the way
Cheering on the faithful, encouraging the weary
Their lives a stirring testament to God's sustaining grace

Surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses
Let us run the race not only for the prize
But as those who've gone before us
Let us leave to those behind us
The heritage of faithfulness passed on through godly lives

CHORUS:
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave
Lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful

After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone
And our children sift through all we've left behind
May the clues that they discover and the memories they uncover
Become the light that leads them to the road we each must find

REPEAT CHORUS

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
